How to Maintain Your Hand-Tied Extensions

May 13, 2026 • By Emily, Owner & Stylist

Hand-tied extensions are one of the most natural-looking, comfortable extension methods out there. But like any investment in your hair, they need a little TLC to stay looking their best. Here are our top tips for keeping your extensions gorgeous between salon visits.

1. Brush Gently & Often

Use a loop brush or extension-safe detangling brush at least twice a day. Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling on the wefts. This prevents matting and keeps everything smooth and blended.

2. Wash the Right Way

Use a sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo and conditioner. When washing, don't pile your hair on top of your head — instead, let it hang naturally and gently work the product through. Focus conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the bonds.

3. Sleep Smart

Always braid your hair or put it in a loose ponytail before bed. A silk or satin pillowcase is a game-changer too — it reduces friction and keeps your extensions (and your natural hair) smooth and tangle-free.

4. Avoid Excess Heat

Extensions can handle heat styling, but keep it moderate. Always use a heat protectant and try to keep your tools below 350°F. Air drying when possible is always the best option for longevity.

5. Keep Up With Move-Ups

As your natural hair grows, the wefts will shift down. Schedule a move-up appointment every 6–8 weeks to keep everything secure, comfortable, and looking seamless. This is the #1 thing you can do to extend the life of your extensions.
