5 Tips for a Salon-Quality Blowout at Home

March 22, 2026 • By the Oak & Ivory Team

There's nothing quite like walking out of the salon with a perfect blowout — bouncy, smooth, and full of volume. But what happens when you try to recreate it at home and it just doesn't look the same? You're not alone. Our stylists share their top secrets for getting that salon-fresh look from your own bathroom.

1. Start With the Right Products

The foundation of a great blowout is what you put in your hair before you even pick up the dryer. Apply a heat protectant to damp hair from roots to ends — this is non-negotiable. Then add a volumizing mousse or blowout cream depending on your hair type. Fine hair loves a lightweight mousse; thicker hair benefits from a smoothing cream.

2. Rough Dry First

Don't go straight for the round brush on soaking wet hair. First, rough dry your hair to about 80% dry using your fingers or a paddle brush. This removes excess moisture and cuts your styling time in half. Once your hair is mostly dry, you're ready for the round brush finish.

3. Section Your Hair

This is the step most people skip — and it makes all the difference. Clip your hair into sections: bottom layer first, then work your way up. Trying to blowout all your hair at once leads to uneven results and frizz. Small sections = more control and smoother results.

“The number one thing I tell clients is to section their hair. It feels like extra work, but it's actually faster because each section dries properly and you don't have to go back over it.”

— Emily, Owner & Stylist

4. Use the Right Brush

A round brush is your best friend for a blowout. The size matters: smaller barrels create more curl and volume at the ends, while larger barrels give a smoother, straighter finish with a slight bend. For most people, a medium-to-large round brush works great. Hold the dryer above the brush and keep it moving — don't hold heat in one spot too long.

5. Finish With a Blast of Cool Air

Once you've dried a section, switch your dryer to cool and blast it for a few seconds. This sets the style, seals the cuticle, and adds shine. It's the secret to why salon blowouts last longer and look glossier. Finish with a light mist of shine spray or a tiny drop of hair oil on the ends for that final polish.

Quick Recap:

Apply heat protectant + volumizing product to damp hair
Rough dry to 80% before using a round brush
Section your hair — bottom to top
Use a round brush with the dryer above it, keep moving
Finish each section with a cool blast to set the style
